Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $48,871)

The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each state's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each state to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the state, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their states.

Under this award, the Colorado Statistical Analysis (SAC) Center plans to continue the collection of data for the Deaths in Custody study and provide the information to BJS on an annual basis. The SAC Director also intends to work with the Colorado Department of Human Services' Division of Behavioral Health and other stakeholders to evaluate the success of Short Term Intensive Residential Remediation Treatment programs. In-state and out-of-state travel expenses are being requested to conduct research and attend the annual BJS/JRSA Conference. Grant funds will also be used to produce the SAC's criminal justice newsletter, Elements of Change.
