Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $70,590)

The Ohio Statistical Analysis Center proposes two projects for this grant. The first project focuses on the creation of an enhanced model for presenting Ohio Incident Based-Reporting System (OIBRS) data on the SAC’s website.  The website currently has several reports and visualizations that are accessible to the public. However, many of these data products are outdated and those seeking access to crime data often need to reach out to SAC members to obtain updated and more detailed data. This project will address these issues by implementing a sustainable workflow and process for creating website content and updating OIBRS data on a regular basis. This project will enable the creation of data products in different formats, such as research reports, research briefs, data dashboards, and downloadable datasets.  This is important because it will allow the Ohio SAC to create more accurate data products using OIBRS data and will make meaningful data available to a larger audience. The second project will examine human trafficking data submitted by law enforcement agencies in OIBRS. Human trafficking incident data has become increasingly accessible and utilized at the national and local levels. In light of this, there is an anticipated need for examining and sharing how human trafficking is identified and then reported by local law enforcement agencies to OIBRS and how state data is translated to meet federal reporting requirements of the Uniform Crime Report Program by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The primary investigator for the project will examine and analyze human trafficking incident data within OIBRS, review human trafficking incident narratives from law enforcement agencies, and conduct interviews with reporting agencies. As a result of project activities, the PI will develop a report that describes the context of human trafficking data reported in OIBRS and summarizes information on OIBRS reporting mechanics and data quality for those who request and use human trafficking incident data from OIBRS.
