Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $10,000,000)
Under this award, the Judiciary Courts of Michigan requests funds to acquire and implement data management system(s) to collect information on actions not taken directly by judges, including juvenile data prior to formal court action (i.e., diversion) and after adjudication (i.e., juvenile probation), and adult data after misdemeanor conviction (i.e., adult probation). Currently, the Michigan Department of Corrections collects data for adult felony probation cases. In addition, trial courts use a variety of methods to collect juvenile diversion/probation and misdemeanor probation data, which is oftentimes stored in a paper file, causing significant barriers to statewide data collection. The system funded by this grant will create, for the first time, an infrastructure for capturing this data in a consistent and timely manner. It will also facilitate the immediate identification of records, including relevant juvenile and adult criminal records that would prohibit the purchase or possessing of firearms. The records will be more easily accessible for criminal history record inquiries at the state and federal levels.
