Adding the local jail population would increase this figure to 1.4 percent. The majority of those under correctional care on a given day are on probation. Different jurisdictions vary in the relative mix of sanctions for offenders. Ten jurisdictions reported 1 percent or more of the adult population on probation at the end of 1983. Twenty-six jurisdictions reported more than 1 percent of the adult population on probation or parole or in prison on that date; five reported more than 2 percent. During 1983, the adult probation population increased by 10.7 percent, and the adult parole population increased by more than 12.1 percent. Data tables give State-by-State analyses, types of probation exits, types of parole entries and exits, and the ratios of different types of offenders to the adult population in each State. Lists of reports and bulletins from the Bureau of Justice Statistics are also supplied.
