Description
This program seeks to evaluate the current state and availability of data sources to measure community initiated and officer initiated events, including calls for service, to law enforcement. The work will examine the use of 911 services compared to police dispatch repositories, data pooled by vendors supplying computer aided dispatch (CAD) systems to law enforcement and public safety agencies, and data available on third party vendor sites and through public open data portal(s). The information gathering will also examine any legal constraints impacting access to these data. Information from this project will assist BJS in determining if automated data can be used to develop an estimate of police events for the nation and a national estimate of how many police events are subsequently recorded as crime incidents.
