FY 2019 Mississippi NCHIP

The goal of the National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP) is to improve the Nation's safety and security by enhancing the quality, completeness, and accessibility of criminal history record information and by insuring the nationwide implementation of criminal justice and non-criminal justice background check systems. BJS provides direct financial and technical assistance to the States to improve criminal history and other related records and to build their infrastructure to connect to national record check systems both to supply information and to conduct the requisite checks.

Under this award, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (MDPS) will use funds to maintain and improve its existing criminal history system, along with the hardware and software applications that support it. Over the past several years, with the support of MDPS and the Mississippi Criminal Information Center (MCIC), the state of Mississippi has built a state-of-the-art criminal records system. Funds are being requested to achieve the following goals & objectives: 1) hire additional personnel to reduce the backlog of disposition records being received by the courts, and 2) purchase computer workstations for the additional personnel. MDPS will work with all entities involved to achieve the aforementioned goals as it continues to strive to provide the most thorough and complete criminal history information for all city, state, and federal agencies authorized to attain this information.
