Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $117,718)
The goal of the National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP) is to improve the Nation's safety and security by enhancing the quality, completeness, and accessibility of criminal history record information and by insuring the nationwide implementation of criminal justice and noncriminal justice background check systems. BJS provides direct financial and technical assistance to the states to improve criminal history and other related records and to build their infrastructure to connect to national record check systems both to supply information and to conduct the requisite checks.
Under the NCHIP 2019 project, the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Criminal Justice Assistance (OCJA) will use funds to upgrade livescan equipment and to develop an interface between the state's Protection Order Program and the FBI National Criminal Background Check System (NICS). The interface will automate the entry of eligible protection orders from the state Protection Order File (POF) to the NICS Indices. Currently, the entry is manually
performed by the Records Bureaus POC staff, whereas staffing is limited and workloads continue to increase. OCJA will also use funds for personnel expenses associated with fiscal and programmatic management actions.
