2018 Colorado NCHIP

The goal of the National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP) is to improve the Nation's safety and security by enhancing the quality, completeness, and accessibility of criminal history record information and by insuring the nationwide implementation of criminal justice and noncriminal justice background check systems. BJS provides direct financial and technical assistance to the states to improve criminal history and other related records and to build their infrastructure to connect to national record check systems both to supply information and to conduct the requisite checks.

Under this award, the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice plans to provide subgrants to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Colorado District Attorneys’ Council (CDAC). Funds will be used by CBI to improve the disposition match rate for misdemeanor and felony records by researching and updating records in the State’s Criminal History Record Information System and the FBI’s national databases, as well as updating and correcting criminal history records in the Colorado Crime Information Center and the National Crime Information Center which are missing arrest data. CDAC is requesting funds to pilot a “Municipal Court Data Gathering” project which will create a system that can extract and store municipal case data, and make this data available to municipal prosecutors and judges, district attorney prosecutors, and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Program management and support will also be covered with funds from the NCHIP 2018 program.
