Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2016, $80,000)
Under this supplemental award, the Visiting Fellow will continue his work with BJSs Recidivism, Reentry, and Special Projects (RRSP) Unit and the Corrections Unit.
Using criminal history information obtained from the FBIs Interstate Identification Index through NLETS, the Visiting Fellow is examining the recidivism patterns of persons released from prison in 30 states in 2005 and tracks their criminal activities over five years within and across state lines. The work will determine the percentage of all offenders who are rearrested each month throughout the follow-up period. In addition, these data are being used to look at the mortality of persons who have been released from prison in 2005. BJS study will be the first near national examination of the mortality of former prisoners, including data from 30 states. In order to accurately calculate life expectancy of state prisoners, the Visiting Fellow will use data from the Deaths in Custody Reporting Program (DCRP) and the Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities (SISFCF) to create life tables. He will also complete a paper on mortality among probation and parole populations. (CA/NCF)
