Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $171,108)
The goal of the National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP) is to improve the Nation's safety and security by enhancing the quality, completeness, and accessibility of criminal history record information and by insuring the nationwide implementation of criminal justice and non-criminal justice background check systems. BJS provides direct financial and technical assistance to the States to improve criminal history and other related records and to build their infrastructure to connect to national record check systems both to supply information and to conduct the requisite checks.
Under this award, the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement (LCLE) intends to enhance the state's Prosecuting Attorneys' Management Information System (PAMIS) enabling information on persons prohibited from possessing and/or purchasing a firearm are included in National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). Funds will also be used to assist district courts with purchasing new/replacement equipment and software to capture dispositions and sentencing information in the courts' case management systems. In addition, LCLE is seeking funds to support the services of a state employee to oversee the day-to-day operations of the state's NCHIP program.
