Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $51,622)
The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each state's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data.
The SJS Program provides support to each state to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the state, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their states.
Under this award, the Vermont SAC will conduct new research using state criminal histories, court data and protection order data on domestic violence arrests, prosecutions and sentencing. A comprehensive review of domestic violence case processing has not been completed in the state for over 10 years, and this will be the first time that a typology of domestic violence offenders using state criminal histories has been conducted. An examination of the processing of domestic violence arrests, prosecution and sentencing will be done using NIBRS, court data and criminal histories, and a typology will be created of domestic violence offenders to help inform policymakers on sentencing practices, correctional programs and relief from abuse orders.
