The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each state's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each state to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the state, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their states.
Under this award, the Oklahoma SAC will conduct the following activities: 1) collect and report statewide data on deaths occurring in police custody and develop formal policies and procedures for ongoing reporting to BJS; 2) review state administrative records related to the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 to recommend improvements to data quality and accuracy; and, 3) develop and implement a statewide crime victimization survey to provide estimates of crime victimization in Oklahoma and compare with BJS's National Criminal Victimization Survey.
