The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each State's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each State to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the State, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their States.
Under this award, Norwich Studies and Analysis Institute d/b/a the Vermont Center for Justice Research will conduct a study on the impact of legislation on DUI arrests, prosecutions, and sentencing. DUI processing remains central to justice statistical analysis and policy for the state and this research will allow for informed policy decisions. Alcohol persists as the most prevalent substance abuse problem impacting Vermont's criminal justice system. The volume and nature of DUI offending on the criminal justice system at all levels is significant, and has attracted renewed attention from both justice policy and resource management perspectives. The Vermont SAC will provide a report of the research findings for the next legislative session and submit a criminal history analysis and recidivism typology for publication in a peer reviewed journal.
