Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $75,000)
The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each State's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each State to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the State, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their States.
Under this award, the Oregon SAC will:
1) Continue to review the cost-benefit of criminal justice programs in Oregon as specified by the state legislature. Funds will be used to assess programs that are evidence-based and cost-effective. The Oregon Criminal Justice Commission and the SAC will work with state agencies to determine which programs meet the criteria of being cost effective.
2) Review the cost effectiveness of drug courts to help set performance measures for the program. Funding will allow the review of how drug court graduates differ from those on regular probation in terms of recidivism and treatment completion.
3) Update arrest and offense data for 2006 on the SAC website, and update monthly drug arrest trends in Oregon by drug type and by county. The SAC is also evaluating whether to include other data such as incarceration rates and conviction rates by county and crime type.
4) Conduct a study of crime trends in Oregon Indian County. The project will also implement specialized data collection in those tribal communities where Bureau of Indian Affairs-supported data collection does not currently exist. The study will result in individualized tribal community reports that will assist in the development of crime prevention programs.
