Research on the Cost-Effectiveness of Programs Designed to Reduce Future Crime

The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each State's capacity to address criminal justice issues through the collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each State to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the State, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their States.

Under this award, the Oregon SAC will:

1) Review the cost-benefit of criminal justice programs in Oregon as specified by the state legislature. Funds are requested to assess programs that are evidence-based and cost-effective. The Oregon Criminal Justice Commission and the SAC will work with state agencies to determine which programs meet the criteria of being cost effective.

2) Review the cost effectiveness of drug courts to help set performance measures for the program. Funding will allow the review of how drug court graduates differ from those on probation who do not engage in drug courts in regards to recidivism and treatment completion. This project was requested by the Oregon legislature.

3) Update data on the SAC website that have not been updated in the past two years.
