It is estimated that 1 in 53 adults in the United States was under some form of correctional supervision on any given day in 1987. The probation population in 1987 increased 6 percent over the 1986 probation population. In 1987 parole populations increased by 11 percent over 1986. Specific parole and probation population figures are provided for States and indicate substantial increases or decreases. Significant changes in individual State probation or parole policies are also noted. 4 tables.
