The survey obtains its data by interviewing 72,000 household units throughout the United States at six month intervals. All persons over the age of 12 years in the household units are interviewed either in person or by telephone. Persons interviewed are asked whether they were victimized during the six months preceding the interview. Rape victims are asked to supply detailed information about each rape and to report the characteristics of the offender. The codebook contains specific information on weighting data, computing the standard error of estimates, and a variable description list.
