This paper describes a new methodology for estimating the incidence and cumulative incidence of imprisonment in the United States. It estimates the age at which the first prison admission is most likely to occur, trends in incidence across age cohorts, and trends in cumulative incidence across these cohorts. It uses data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Corrections Reporting Program from 1982 to 1987.
