One of a series of reports of state data from the national crime (NCS) survey, this publication presents information on selected crimes of violence and theft experienced by New York state residents during 1974-77. Charts and a glossary are included. ( Modified)
Abstract
The data include events that were reported to the police and those that were not. The approximately 70 statistical tables, covering information on victims, offenders, crime characteristics, and other topics, are based on the portion of the NCS sample that is in New York State, covering an average of some 28,000 persons a year. Most of the data are presented in the form of 4-year means, although basic crime and police reporting rates are given for 1974, 1975, 1976, and 1977 as well. The following crimes were investigated: (1) personal crimes, including rape, robbery, assault, and personal larceny; and (2) property crimes, including residential burglary, household larceny, and motor vehicle theft. Excluded from consideration were crimes experienced by New York state residents outside the country and by nonresident visitors to the state, such as commuters and foreign visitors. Methodological appendixes and a series of technical notes are appended as aids to the interpretation of survey results. Data for this report were collected and analyzed by the U.S. Bureau of the Census.
