In 1990, police in North Dakota reported 17,021 crime index offenses, an increase of 1.9 percent from the 1989 total. The index crime rate for the State was 2,665 per 100,000 population. The total of violent index crimes was 365, representing 2 percent of the total index crimes and a decrease of nearly 12 percent from the number of violent crimes reported in 1989. All property crimes increased 2.2 percent from the previous year; the 13,505 larceny/thefts reported in 1990 accounted for 79 percent of total index crimes. Over $11 million worth of property was lost to crime in 1990; police recovered about 31 percent of that amount. Approximately 30 percent of index crimes was cleared by police through arrests or other means; this was the highest clearance rate reported in the past 14 years. Police agencies in the State arrested 25,508 people in 1990; approximately one-quarter of arrestees were under the age of 18. 21 tables, 17 figures, and 6 appendixes
