The Crime Index is used as a basic measurement of crime and is made up of the following eight offenses: murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. An offense is considered to be cleared (solved) when at least one offender is arrested. There were 102,437 serious crimes reported in Arkansas in 1988; twenty-five percent of these were cleared. The value of property stolen amounted to $68,218,063 with a recovery rate of 37 percent. Firearms were used in 61 percent of all murder/nonnegligent manslaughter cases reported. Other statistics include the following: 779 reported rapes; 65 percent of all burglaries reported were residential; and two law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty. Arrest data and law enforcement employment data are detailed. Glossary.
