This publication presents data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics on State and Federal inmate populations in 1991, parole and probation populations in 1990, crime victimization rates, Federal drug offense convictions, and violent crime in schools.
Abstract
It also describes recent activities of the Department of Justice relating to gangs, law enforcement, criminal history records, the Federal drug information clearinghouse, and the Justice Statistics Clearinghouse. State and Federal prison populations increased by 4 percent during the first half of 1991. In addition, parole and probation populations exceeded 3.2 million in 1990. Moreover, personal and household victimization declined by 3 percent in 1990. Between 1980 and 1990, convictions for Federal drug law offenses increased by 213 percent. Finally, about 400,000 students experienced violent crime during a 6-month period in 1988 and 1989. Figures, tables, and lists and descriptions of BJS publications
