FY20 NCHIP Indiana

The goal of the National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP) is to improve the Nation's safety and security by enhancing the quality, completeness, and accessibility of criminal history record information and by insuring the nationwide implementation of criminal justice and noncriminal justice background check systems. BJS provides direct financial and technical assistance to the states to improve criminal history and other related records and to build their infrastructure to connect to national record check systems both to supply information and to conduct the requisite checks.

Under this award, the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute plans to transfer funds to the Indiana State Police (ISP) for the replacement and enhancement of their most critical criminal history information systems. The request will cover the complete replacement and upgrades to the state’s Criminal History Record Information System (CHRIS) server infrastructure. Because most of these servers access criminal justice information in some form, they must be kept-up-to-date to comply with FBI/CJIS security policy. This funding request will transition ISP hardware and operating systems into a modern and efficient virtual environment, cover costs for implementing the upgrade, and provide maintenance and support.
