Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2011, $69,981)

The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each state's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each state to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the state, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their states.

The Massachusetts Statistical Analysis Center (SAC) will use SJS funds to conduct two research projects: 1) the SAC will analyze intake data from the Massachusetts Department of Corrections to assess the incoming offender population and identify underlying demographic characteristics including age, race, gender, education and employment background, and substance abuse history to inform policymakers in their resource allocation decisions regarding corrections expenditures; and 2) the SAC will assess the current status of Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping in local jurisdictions and identify police departments using best practices in order to inform police departments throughout the state about the full potential and benefits of GIS-based crime analysis. The SAC will produce and publish reports detailing the research and findings.
