Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $300,000)

The goal of the National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP) is to improve the Nation's safety and security by enhancing the quality, completeness, and accessibility of criminal history record information and by insuring the nationwide implementation of criminal justice and non-criminal justice background check systems. BJS provides direct financial and technical assistance to the States to improve criminal history and other related records and to build their infrastructure to connect to national record check systems both to supply information and to conduct the requisite checks.

Under this award, the New Hampshire Department of Justice will use funds to improve disposition reporting by implementing the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) Project. This project will purchase livescan devices to increase the number of automated fingerprints taken and better utilize resources to reduce the backlog of 86,000 inked fingerprint cards that need to be entered into the Tri-State AFIS system. In addition, funds will be applied to upgrade the Tri-State AFIS system that stores fingerprints, latent prints, and palm prints for Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. This is a critical part of the project since it is projected the remaining storage space will reach full capacity with the next few months.
