Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $25,689)
The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each state's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each state to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the state, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their states.
Under this award, the Hawaii Statistical Analysis Center will conduct a study on burglary and motor vehicle theft offenses. Uniform Crime Reporting data show that Hawaii ranks at or near the top of states and territories reporting the highest property crime rates in the nation. In 2008, the value of property taken in burglaries was over $27 million and approximately $33.5 million in motor vehicle thefts statewide. Presently, no reliable information is available on the conviction rates of those arrested for such offenses, and very little is known about the arrestees or convicted offenders.
The SAC will work with the University of Hawaii at Hilo to conduct a study that will provide information to the state on burglary and motor vehicle theft offenses, including details on demographics, criminal histories, case processing and outcomes. Findings will be published in a report to provide local criminal justice agencies an aggregate statistical portrait of those arrested and those convicted for the crimes of burglary and motor vehicle theft in Hawaii.
