West Virginia's 2010 State Justice Statistics Program

The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each state's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each state to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the state, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their states.

Under this award, the West Virginia SAC intends to conduct the following activities: 1) obtain information on each death occurring in police custody and produce a report for BJS through coordination with the Chief Medical Examiner of the state; 2) conduct research on examining effective alternatives to prison; 3) increase access to crime and justice data by enhancing the SAC website to allow users to develop queries using WVIBRS data to obtain information on offenses, arrests, and victims reported to law enforcement in the state; and 4) track offenders released from community corrections programs in the state to establish a mechanism utilizing criminal history records. Funds will also be used for the SAC to travel to the JRSA Conference in Portland, ME.
