Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $50,350)
The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each state's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each state to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the state, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their states.
The South Carolina Statistical Analysis Center located within the Department of Public Safety will conduct the following activities: (1) publish the annual, comprehensive report 'South Carolina Criminal and Juvenile Justice Trends'; (2) continue to serve as a point of contact for the Deaths in Custody data collection; (3) update and expand the SAC website to include key-word search capability and web-friendly reports (4) produce two five-year SAC website; and (5) facilitate and partially support a state Institutional Review Board (IRB) to review any research projects that involve human subjects or identifiable data elements relating to human subjects.
