2008 Utah State Justice Statistics Program Grant--Domestic Violence

The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each State's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each State to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the State, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their States.

Under this award, the Utah SAC will obtain statewide data on deaths occurring in the process of arrest or in pursuit of arrest pursuant to the Deaths in Custody Reporting Act of 2000 and conduct research on domestic violence issues in Utah using a multi-faceted approach. Domestic violence research will include: (1) conduct a literature review to identify data elements and data collection methodologies; (2) analyze and report on 5 years of data collected by the Domestic Violence Council Death Review Committee; (3) develop a data collection methodology to obtain and analyze all future homicides; (4) examine data from criminal history and NIBRS datasets to link violent incidents involving family members and intimate partners from NIBRS to the outcomes found in the criminal history record (CHR) system and further link state court information to these data; and (5) evaluate and recommend improvements to the state protective order system.
