Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $50,000)

The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each State's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each State to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the State, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their States.

Under this award, the Washington SAC, located in the Human Services Section of the Forecasting Division of the Washington State Office of Financial Management, will examine the impact of substance abuse on the state's criminal justice and public health systems.
The SAC's examination will include the cost of incarcerating persons for drug sentences with a particular emphasis on identifying Washington counties that have the highest drug-related costs. The analysis will also explore the geographic patterns of criminal justice spending on drug-related crimes.
