Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $55,980)
The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each State's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each State to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the State, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their States.
Under this award, the Florida SAC (FSAC) will analyze the State's criminal history record system to produce a profile of the State's firearm offenders. The FSAC will examine offenders by establishing a cohort of those with firearm-related felony convictions during the calendar years 2001-2005. The cohort will make up the entire population of offenders with firearm-related convictions for those years. A description of each cohort will include a demographic profile, geographic profile and a breakdown by offense types found in the subject's history. A report will be prepared for policy makers and the criminal justice community describing the scope of criminality of firearm-related offenders in Florida.
