Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $55,239)

The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each State's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each State to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the State, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their States.

The Maryland Statistical Analysis Center (MdSAC) was established within the Governor's Office of Crime Control & Prevention (GOCCP) on March 26, 2007 through Executive Order (01.01.2007.05). This order provides for a State Statistical Analysis Center (SAC) to support the purposes of collecting and analyzing statewide criminal justice statistics.

Under this award, the MdSAC will create an interactive website that streamlines communication, stimulates information sharing, and broadcasts State crime trends and best practices. Elements of the website include distribution of data through geographic information system (GIS); a comprehensive resource database containing both internal and external publications; and online tutorials for Internet Mapping and Resource Database basics to help users maximize their results. Additionally, the MdSAC will use funds to develop and improve performance measures designed to assess public safety and administration of justice functions.
