Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $50,000)
The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each State's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each State to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the State, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their States.
Under this award the Rhode Island SAC will continue efforts to: (1) collect and analyze data on traffic stops from law enforcement agencies; (2) collect and analyze data on the nature and characteristics of juveniles detained in the State in order to implement a system to monitor compliance of the core protections under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act; (3) obtain statewide data occurring in the process of arrest or in pursuit of arrest pursuant to the Deaths in Custody Reporting Act of 2000 (Pub. L. 106-297); and, (4) update and enhance the SAC website to include additional data resources and reports.
