Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $1,570,058)
Under this award, the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and The Ohio Supreme Court requests funds to enhance the overall completeness and accessibility of Ohio’s Mental Illness Adjudication Reporting system (MIAR) database to ensure individuals are properly denied or permitted to purchase or carry a firearm. BCI will use funds to upgrade the current electronic MIAR reporting system and database so that it can serve as the exclusive method for submitting MIAR records to BCI. To facilitate these enhancements, BCI intends to utilize contractors to supplement the expertise and manpower of its own ITS personnel. BCI also will use funds to provide sub-grants to 10 local juvenile/probate courts to address the multitude of local issues that prevent electronic submissions. BCI will setup a competitive grant process to award funding to juvenile/probate courts for the purpose of facilitating electronic submissions of records to BCI. In addition to the issues and projects described above Ohio hopes to enhance its ability to stop individuals with convictions to certain misdemeanor crimes against intimate partners who are prohibited from purchasing a firearm under federal law. As well as purchase livescan machines for four courts throughout the state.
