Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $44,786)
The Michigan SAC requests FY 2022 SJS funds to carry out a core capacity project to improve criminal justice statistical processes and make analytical tools available to agencies to better address public safety and administration of justice goals. With previous SJS awards, the MSAC has worked with the State Administering Agency (SAA), which is the Michigan State Police (MSP), to gather data, complete reports, and assist in the development of best practices. MSP’s Office of School Safety (OSS) interfaces with the Michigan Department of Education and other state agencies to provide technical assistance on issues of school safety. Building off previous SJS awards, this project again will co-locate a Michigan State University graduate student at MSP to help on assigned projects related within the OSS. Specifically, this will involve activities such as gathering information and preparing a comparative matrix regarding school safety best practices, surveying school staff regarding perceptions of school safety (and producing a related report), gathering data on Michigan school districts’ progress on the development of emergency operation plans, and outreach with Michigan schools to gauge capacity to implement school safety best practices. This project will build capacity within the MSAC, continue the strong partnership with the SAA, and provide valuable data for schools and police agencies around Michigan.
