Description
Provides data on all tribal law enforcement agencies operating in the United States, including tribally operated agencies, Bureau of Indian Affairs police, and the Alaska Village Public Safety Officers program. Data collected include the number of agencies, full-time sworn personnel, annual calls for services and arrests, jurisdiction, and functions or duties performed by each agency.
The 2019 Census of Tribal Law Enforcement Agencies (CTLEA) data collection form was mailed to nearly 305 agencies potentially operating nationwide. This master list was created by compiling information from—
the 2018 Census of State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies (CSLLEA) list of tribal respondents
the 2002 Census of Tribal Justice Agencies respondents
the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s Indian Country Law Enforcement Section membership list
a list of tribal justice agencies received from the FBI’s Indian Crime Unit.
Responses were received through website, mail, and phone options. Responding agencies were screened for eligibility to be included in the final CTLEA database. Agencies were eligible if any of the following conditions existed during the CTLEA reference date of January 1, 2018, through December 31, 2018:
Employed at least one full-time sworn officer with general arrest powers, the authority to issue citations, or both
Had law enforcement authority under a federal or state government, federally recognized tribe, tribal constitution, or tribal code.
