Collects data from all federal law enforcement agencies with arrest and firearms authority. Data collected include the number of officers working in the areas of criminal investigation and law enforcement, police patrol and response, security and protection, court operations, and corrections, by agency and state.
The 2023 Census included 94 eligible agencies. Of these, 89 responded for an overall response rate of 95%. The officer counts include supervisory and nonsupervisory personnel with federal arrest authority who were also authorized (but not necessarily required) to carry firearms while on duty. The officer counts exclude officers in the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and the Transportation Security Administration's Federal Air Marshals.
