Public comments requested on the reinstatement of BJS data collection: 2022 Census of State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies (CSLLEA)

BJS encourages comments for 60 days through May 31, 2022, on the proposed collection: 2022 Census of State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies (CSLLEA). Your comments on BJS’s request to the Office of Management and Budget, which is published in the Federal Register, should address points such as—

• whether the proposed data collection is necessary, including whether the information will have practical utility
• the accuracy of the agency’s estimate of the burden of the proposed collection of data, including the validity of the methodology and assumptions
• whether and how the quality, utility, and clarity of the information to be collected can be enhanced
• the burden of the data collection on respondents, including the use of appropriate automated, electronic, mechanical, or other technological collection techniques.

Through the CSLLEA, BJS will collect data on personnel counts and an overview of the functions performed for approximately 20,000 law enforcement agencies operating nationally. This effort will collect information from all publicly funded state, county, and local law enforcement agencies operating in the United States. Upon completion, the 2022 CSLLEA will serve as the sampling frame for future law enforcement surveys administered by BJS.
