BJS is pleased to announce Dr. Shelley S. Hyland as its new Senior Statistical Advisor. Shelley has over 15 years of experience conducting data collection, research, and statistical analysis. Since 2020, she served as Supervisory Program Specialist at the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office). In this role, she oversaw a team of social science analysts and senior program specialists. She served as the COPS Office subject-matter expert on research, data analysis, and various policing topic areas.
Prior to joining the COPS Office, Shelley was a statistician in BJS’s Law Enforcement Statistics Unit for 6 years. While at BJS, she served as a program manager for most of the law enforcement collections and developed the Law Enforcement Core Statistics Program. Before working at BJS, Shelley was a research manager at the Washington University School of Medicine, a research and policy analyst for the Schenectady (NY) Police Department, and a crime analyst for the City of Kingston (NY) Police Department. Shelley holds a PhD in criminal justice from the University at Albany-SUNY (NY).
Shelley is the proud mother to one son and a ginger cat. She enjoys strength training, and loves to travel to new countries.
